Using Negative Words in the Workplace
Over the years, using negative words in the workplace has become an increasing problem for businesses. Words such as "gay", "karen", and "snowflake" are often used in a derogatory manner, causing harm to colleagues by making them feel hurt and uncomfortable. We look at the issues surrounding the use of negative language at work.
Negative language and mental health
The way in which people use a word can result in a significant impact on people’s mental health and well-being. Certain words and phrases used in a derogatory manner can cause feelings of stress, anxiety, and even depression for those on the receiving end. This can have a ripple effect throughout the workplace.
Employees may begin to feel isolated and disconnected from their colleagues, leading to lower morale and a less productive work environment. Often there is no malice behind the use of a word, but while certain words might be intended in a positive manner, ultimately they are received negatively.
For example, let’s look at three common uses of contentious words:
Gay
In older generations, this word was used in the context of “being happy”. For many middle-aged people, this word means and continues to mean “being homosexual”. However, in younger generations, for a while, this word was being used to describe things that were broken, like “a gay chair” or “a gay table”. As a result, this led to an association of being gay, as in homosexual, as being “broken” with a negative connotation assigned to it.
Karen
In today’s digital world, the word “Karen” has become a widespread meme on social media. It is often used to reference a specific type of middle-class white woman, who exhibits behaviours that stem from privilege. For someone called Karen, this can be highly offensive at a very deep and personal level. After all, this is their name, but they have suddenly become the butt of numerous jokes. They feel powerless because if they defend themselves, they are then seen as a “snowflake”.
Snowflake
"Snowflake" is a derogatory slang term for a person, which implies they have an inflated sense of uniqueness, an unwarranted sense of entitlement, or are overly-emotional. “Snowflakes” are considered to be people who are easily offended, and unable to deal with opposing opinions. It’s sad that something as pretty and positive as a snowflake is now being used in a negative manner.
Managers need to be aware of the negative impact
In business, it’s really important that managers are aware of the negative impact of using this type of terminology. The use of negative language can quickly create a hostile and toxic work environment. Managers should challenge employees when they hear words being used in this manner. A workplace that tolerates language being used in a derogatory way will only encourage negative behaviour, leading to employees feeling disrespected and unsupported.
Employees who feel unvalued will end up leaving your company, which means you could lose talented people who are important for your business. A loss of certain skill sets could negatively impact your productivity and turnover.
The Equality Act 2010
Moreover, using negative language in the workplace can be illegal. The Equality Act 2010 provides protection against discrimination, harassment, and victimisation for protected characteristics. These include age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. Employers have a legal obligation to provide a safe and inclusive work environment for their employees, which includes the use of language.
So, what can businesses do to address the use of negative language in the workplace?
Manager and team training
Encourage a culture of open dialogue, so employees feel able to report any incidents of negative language. Work with your managers to provide training and support to employees on the importance of positive language and behaviours. This could include team workshops, role-playing exercises, and other interactive activities that promote awareness. Explain the impact negative language can have on colleagues and the work environment.
By promoting a positive work environment, which includes positive language and behaviours, you will create a culture of respect and inclusion in the workplace. A safe and inclusive work environment is one where employees feel valued, respected, and supported.
At Invictus HR, we believe that it’s important to take a proactive approach when addressing negative words being used in your workplace. The use of certain language can have a big impact on your team morale, affecting your people’s ability to work productively.
